I leave you guys alone for half a day and I come back to this! I like it. I think it is good to have this well of knowledge and let players draw from it. We are ironing things out but I would be glad to have more people involved.

This is a fantastic initiative, an effective way to pass on the wealth of information that Dota requires from experienced players onto learning members.
I'm happy to lend my help as a Mentor if Uno, Fallen and ATLAS would like an extra hat on the stand. I had been loosely tussling with the idea of setting up a new players event on a weekly/fortnightly schedule to help newer players cover some of the very basics and allow them to jump into general matchmaking with other Doobs so enjoyment of this rather smashing community can continue to rise! By basics I would be referring to: - The theory behind who farms and why - How to Jungle - Purposes of roles within the game (Carrying, Supporting... etc.) - Where/when/how to ward and why (And rune control for midlaners) - Dealing with common problems like stealth heroes - The thought processes 'what does my team need?' when picking heroes. - Some of the usefull tidbits of information players pick up over time (Why can Ursa lvl1 Rosh? Why can't I find their campblock ward? Why do Veno/Jugger lanes always stomp my face?) This is something i'd be aiming at for players with very little experience, who might feel too daunted by Matchmaking (or the breed of player they might be paired with) or feel too ill-advised about the game to join in with other DotaNoobs members to wreck up the internet. Thoughts? |

First off I would like to address your avatar. It is quite possibly the best and most well matched I have ever seen. Secondly, That is a great idea. What you mentioned concerning basics is exactly what needs to be done. I, being a noob with only 10 wins, could never figure that out. I was thinking about having not only in game practice like we had in the past (because wee always had that one filler guy that was way over all our levels) but also having text and or videos/talks on the subjects. I would love to go find articles on these topics but I would not be able to tell if they were good or bad information wise. We could always do four new players and a vet play in a bot match. That way they wont get stomped so bad like in MM. Let me know how you think it could be structured.

You glorious bastard. You took my mind words and made them written words to be read aloud in your Admiral Kunkka-lite accent. We aim to please! I would think starting basics by actually playing a game through could be somewhat kill or cure. What I had envisioned is something I used to do for the SC2 Division in my old clan (eXe), whereby we would discuss tactics/strategies before a game and then attempt to implement them in a game straight afterwards. I can see the same principle working here, whereby we can talk about how a person can midlane, when wards need to be up, etc - and then you play a game or two against each other armed with your new knowledge. Some of the best strategies i've had have been cooked up from just talking through theories with various other Doobs before we started a game, then trying something a little more off-the-wall than usual. The key thing i'm trying to accomplish, and I think Fallen and Uno are trying to accomplish here are to get newer players more comfortable in the game in general, to the point where you might be able to access certain situations by yourself and figure out what went wrong, how you could avoid the same problem happening again (And so on). Put within a frame it might look something like this: 1. Quick overlook on warding 2. Ideas on current view of how/where to ward 3. Discuss improvements 4. Put it into practice on the battlefield. |

I really like that idea of like a lesson. I think warding is a great place to start because of the fact that a lot of new players fill support roles rather than full blown hard carry. Then from there, it would be easy to build up to more advanced topics like ganks and pulling and lane control.

Really excited for this to be a thing that will be available for one and all. Currently looking into a better understanding on the laning face. Mid-game strategies and weapon/item choices (both defensive and offensive).

We're working on a set Q&A time for people to just pop in and ask questions. Afterwards, we'd play a few games trying to emphasize some of the questions asked. More to come shortly.

Sweet Echo. I think we should have at least a tentative plan by the time we get there so anyone have any thoughts on what to do? I like the Q&A time but it would be hard to direct and keep all the players involved. If we had enough players, we could do a Q&A then break off into two teams and practice that way. Then we will be sure to have newbies vs. newbies. Anything else?

I like the idea of running through tactics/ideas pre game and then trying to implement.
I have really been trying to learn more hero's the past couple of weeks, so i can get a better understanding of what hero i can pick to compliment my team/hinder the other team. I have just been playing "all random", "random draft" and "single draft" with my friend and have really been enjoying finding new hero's i enjoy and just getting a better understanding of things in general ![]() Look forward to getting more involved with the doobs games too ![]() |

Something along the lines of 2 new player teams that go and do a Q&A followed by a bot game which is then followed by a new player vs new player might be an good way of practicing

Alright thread people, this Sunday at 3:00 PM EST (19:00 GMT) Admiral Snuffles, UnoPolak, and I (possibly shane as well, lemon you are also welcome to come help out!) are going to hold the first Doobs Q&A forum followed by a bot/inhouse game or two. We're going to keep the topic very broad, but would like to focus a bit on supporting, since that's where many new players start.
Come ready with questions and we'll do our best to answer them. After the Q&A time we're going to jump into some bot games and have you guys try to put into motion the things we discussed. Any and all questions welcome, nothing is too new. I'll be making a channel in TeamSpeak about 15 minutes before we begin, so feel free to jump in early and chat a bit. Aside from the Q&A, any games you have that you want us to look over, either post them in a new thread or PM the match ID to one of us and we'll take a look at it. Ideally, you can give us specific sections you want us to look at, but if it's the whole game that's fine too (we'll try to cast something about all games sent, but no promises...we gotta work!). Alright, let me know if anyone has any questions. |
