Ruhsbaar enters the underground temple for the first time, the guards of Winterhaven climbing down the trap door behind him, his hand releasing the smooth rung of the ladder as his feet come to touch the stone stairwell beneath. Surveying the battle-scene before him, Ruhsbaar nods in approval to himself, happy with his adventuring parties thorough dispatching of the hidden temples inhabitants.

The guards finish their descent, and Ruhsbaar motions them down the stairs into the temple proper. Daelius the Paladin approaches the group, "Ruhsbaar, you have missed the battle my friend. I see you have alerted Lord Padraig to the situation at hand..." Ruhsbaar flashes a polite smile and thanks the Tiefling for the update, making a mental note to approach Fizzwig about the Sharran necklace as surely it is worth examining further.

Stepping aside, Ruhsbaar introduces the two guards to Daelius and Pale Noon. Dutiful as ever, the Paladin begins inquiring as to what should be done with the temple's leader, motioning to a tied up form on the floor shuffling uncomfortably beneath the shadow of Daelius' greatsword. The questioning brings the guards focus away from the bloody scene around them and back to the tiefling. The shorter of the two guards straightens to attention, "Yes, we should definitely bring him back to be questioned before Lord Padraig...", he motions to his partner before continuing on, "Herak here can maintain guard over... this" he finishes, gesturing about the room. The guard who spoke moves across the temple to where Bairwin, the shops owner and apparent temple leader, lies tied up beside Daelius, "Help me carry him up the stairs, and bring anything else you think Lord Padraig might want to see as evidence."

Urgent matters settled, Ruhsbaar turns away from the guards and begins his own survey of the temple chamber. He slowly moves about the place, looking carefully. Not necessarily for more trap doors or secrets, but instead studying the wall decorations and paging through the handful of books in the room, looking for something...

In regards to non-monetary loot: A system for wealth distribution after an encounter

Loot from an encounter should immediately be divided up into three piles: Hard Cash, Normal Items, Arcane/Imbued Items. We can then process these piles as follows:

  1. Normal Items: First we need to determine if anyone in the party wants/needs any of the items in this pile and note down that they do. Next we take all of it to the blacksmith/general-store or what have you and get a cash value for it all. Items that people wanted can be distributed, and the cash value of the items they took noted down. The rest of this stuff is sold off, and the profits added to pile #3 - Hard Cash.

  2. Magical/Imbued Items: I hope that we can all agree it's worth properly identifying any special items we may find on our adventures. Knowing what an item does lets us determine if it's useful to anyone in the party and sell it for more otherwise. This might mean we are making arcana/religion etc checks to identify them or having them appraised by a third party (blacksmith/wizard). Any costs related to the identification of these items should come out of pile #3 - Hard Cash. Any items that members of the party want can now be distributed, and the cash value of those items noted down. Anything left over can be sold off and those profits of course added to pile #3 - Hard Cash.

  3. Hard Cash: The pile you've all been waiting for - our cold hard profits from the encounter. First, we take a set percentage that will be agreed upon by the party (15-30% maybe?) that moves into a "group" fund. I think Daelin can hold this group fund for us. This money can be used for paying the innkeeper or anything else like that (see Galstaff's post above). The rest of the money is now divided equally among [party members/encounter participants - which should it be?]. The gold-value of any items a player took from pile #1 - Normal Items or pile #2 - Magical Items should now be subtracted from that players share of pile #3 - Hard Cash. The money subtracted from their share should then be distributed equally among party members.

I don't think we should ever TAKE money from a player that they had before the encounter for taking loot from an encounter, that seems silly.

Certainly off-topic for a DotA forum, but this writeup was so good I felt the need to share it with as many people as possible. In todays world our entire lives are documented digitally and stored forever, and protecting/securing that data gets more and more difficult. One of the founders of http://keybase.io wrote an excellent blog-post on the topic here:

Ruhsbaar stands up slowly, rubbing the muscles in his legs and scolding himself for his failed attempt to lift Vaunea and Fizzwig, leaving his meager clothing soaked and stained in the dark Carnelian blood spewing from the neck of Daelius' latest kill.

Back on his feet, the monk looks around the room, noting the location of his companions and scanning for any other imminent danger. Satisfied with his own safety, Ruhsbaar begins a thorough inspection of this latest set of rooms in the Shadowkeep.

Unconcerned with gold and treasure, Ruhsbaar instead is hunting for information. Making his way to each of the fresh corpses, he empties their pockets in search of notes or other cult communications and ruffles through all of the furniture hoping to find a book of Sharran history or perhaps a log of the cults activities in the Keep.

Content with his investigation for now, Ruhsbaar heads back to the mess-hall and helps himself to a bit of bread and water. Hunger appeased, the tall human shoves the table he was seated at away and clears the corner(town) of the room. Reaching into a small pouch dangling at his waist (OOC: inside the waistband, hands off Riot) his fingers come out clenching a small stick of dusty white chalk.

The monk seats himself cross-legged in the clearing and begins drawing a simple but imperfect circle around him, pausing at the four cardinal directions to draw a set of small symmetrical runes that cross the jagged circle. Finishing the circle in a sweep of his arm, Ruhsbaar returns the chalk to his pouch and places his hands down atop his folded knees. Exhaling sharply he tilts his head down to the floor and begins talking softly in an unknown language.

Perhaps ten minutes go by like this before Ruhsbaar lifts his head up again and opens his eyes, slowly lifting himself to his feet again. Shuffling a few steps to the displaced table the monk grabs a decanter of water and drinks deeply, then upends the vessel above his circle, washing away some of the chalk and breaking the off-white circle on the floor. Refreshed and centered mentally, Ruhsbaar walks back to his teammates.
