RE: Meek, Monster Characters, and Alignment:

Out of character, I squee about Meek because 1) his name is cute, 2) he reminds me of Deekin, and 3) I love the idea of a kobold Captain of the Guard. In character, Rolen's alignment is chaotic good, though this is of course a meta explanation. He is a Half-Elven bard - raised, however, fully by his Elven parent and in that environment - who is fluent in Draconic and more educated on Kobolds and Kobold culture than anyone in the party, if not most in the region. I feel Rolen knows who and what Meek is. He does not think Meek is reformed, but he DOES believe that Meek will faithfully serve Winterhaven AS HE SHOULD and that said service is a more humane and worthwhile way to basically enact a prison sentence. I don't think Rolen would see it as slavery so much as a sentence of community service.

Rolen is not going to try finding a job for every monster that can converse in the common tongue. That does not, however, mean that he believes it is moral to execute sentient beings who we encounter already in an incapacitated state. To use the hobgoblin as an example, Rolen finds Daelius's actions to be a disgusting display of "tiefling morality," whereas Kree the person fully understands that this is Penguin RPing his character and that there are legitimate good-alignment reasons Daelius could have for doing that.

I am really trying to not meta game, and in so doing have been attempting to apply a moral code (and this is not "Kree's Moral Code, via Bard") that is believable and feels natural for my character. When Rolen sees a Kobold he does not see a spreadsheet of stats with "Evil" written in as alignment. He sees a sentient being with a complex culture that tends toward what he would describe as evil, but not without exceptions or the ability to reform. (Much like, I'm sorry to bring it up, the Dark Elves/Drow, though on a much lower level intellectually, as well as more environmentally influenced.).

If Rolen were to come across a monster race NPC holding an amulet of Selune, I believe it would be more consistent for HIM to assume nothing. He is not just a slinger of totally badass insults that melt his enemies in single tears of justice. I see his more careful, studied side as part of his elven heritage. I would have hoped it would go without saying that I don't believe Out of Character that every monster we meet is a New Potential Bestest Friend.

Anyway, I am tired and I hope this is clear.

I'd like to clarify that Kree gets this. Rolen, however, does not. At least, not for now.
