Thread hijack! I know exactly what you are talking about and have been mulling this for a few weeks now. This is from our "about us" page:
DotaNoobs.com strives to be a place where new or lower-skill players can come together to enjoy this amazing game and play with a friendly and understanding community. To my knowledge the "striving" has been on an individual level, where players buy into this idea and act accordingly. When there is conflict over these ideas, for example a lot of negativity, someone simply had to step up and tell that person off. I've been around for this and done it myself and the effects were mixed and fairly short-term. I think that the community has to decide how seriously we want to encourage and/or enforce these ideals. There has been some talk about having more organization, particularly for Sunday IHs, where certain members are labeled as moderators or whatever. I don't know how binaryatrocity and Alverez feel about short-term Mumble bans in extreme cases, and maybe official warnings would suffice at keeping the community true to its ideals.
For my part, I have pretty thick skin and am happy to try my hand at captaining whenever I'm not feeling too sick, but that tells me if it's something that is putting me off, I would expect it would put others off who may not be willing to speak up. (Hope this post doesn't offend anyone. I know I'm newer here so I don't have too much ground to stand on, but I fucking love playing with you guys: It's made the game 200% more fun - real maths hehe - and I wanted to give some honest input.) I completely understand, playing with Doobs is fantastic and I think we need to fight to keep it that way. Cheers! |

r/Dota2, it’s that time again. This Sunday, October 7, the Dota Noobs community (dotanoobs.com) will be hosting inhouses starting at 3:00 PM CST (21:00 GMT). Inhouses are welcome to players of all skill levels! The Doobs’ goal is to provide a completely rage free environment for both new and experienced players. Newer players should be comfortable to admit that they didn't realize they could deny creeps. League of Legends doesn't work that way. Experienced players can try their hand at captaining with their crazy 6.75 strat and see if it works. Go for it. (hint: Alchemist works really well) Want to try some weird skill build? Do it up. (Yes, you’re correct; Skadi is good on Alchemist) Need someone to show you how you buy items? We’re here to help. (Hint: you right click, and Alchemist punches things) By now I'm sure you're asking, how do I get involved? Posted by binaryatrocity I almost always go with Headdress first as well, I just really like the regen aura it provides a lot of utility in the lane. I think anytime I'm playing support in a lane, I feel comfortable when I have headdress and manaboots, because you now have the power to stay in the lane indefinitely (potentially). Yup, I can definitely see that. I am thinking about adding some general discussion to the custom builds page (http://www.dotanoobs.com/main/custom-item-builds/) that gives the broad ideas on how to build the various roles. At this point I only feel confident enough to talk about supports, but I have to start somewhere.
Also, great use of the item tooltips  I did away with the transparent backgrounds, made em too hard to read IMHO.It is just too cool not to use.

The hardest part about pulling this off is going to be picking winners, it will require one or two of us core members to spectate each game (if we all spec one game a night that should be enough, I think there should be a steam-chatroom open with us in there discussing all this kinda stuff on Sundays so we can converse regardless of where we are in Mumble). I think a steam chatroom would be perfect for this, and Fallen, Shane and I had already talked about sitting out and spectating different games during the Sunday IHs.
I also think the awards for each night should have the potential to be on a per-game basis. For example, maybe two different newer players to the community dropped 'influential wards' in different games, I think they could both be awarded for that, and if some of the awards go unfulfilled then no big deal. I see no problem with giving shared awards out. If we are having difficulty choosing between two people, spread the joy!
Also, I vote we create a "Mumble" page on the main-site and add it to the nav-bar with connection and download info (screenshots!) and move the "whose online" thing to that page. Then we replace that top area of the side-bar with the last weeks award-winners. New members seeing their name on the front-page after joining us for one Sunday would be cool! That is a great idea. I can give a Mumble page a go on Wordpress and see what you think. Cheers! |

Hey there! I know exactly what you mean about being nervous because when I started playing Dota2 I had not even played LoL, HoN, etc. You should definitely stop by the Mumble server and introduce yourself. We have quite a few Europeans that play, so your hours being all crazy shouldn't be too big of a deal. I would suggest looking for either myself, Shane (Mumble name is just s) or FallenElf and we could party up with you in a co-op bot game to get you more comfortable. Cheers!
