I've been playing Tribes again recently after taking a break.
They recently dropped the requirements for new unlocks by half making gear that much less hard to get.

This is an all call for anybody out there who wants to learn an INCREDIBLY different type of shooter.
Tribes Ascend is 100% free on Steam with the option to buy boosts and such microtransactions.
All content is available to unlock with your earned xp points (No content for paying users besides cosmetics)

Any takers?

Yeah, it was great until they started releasing those weapon packs that were terribly balanced and it really did seem pay2win. I'd heard they've turned it around a lot since then but that's the problem with all these free games. It hard enough to get us gamers to even install your free game now because we're too busy playing our other free games, so if you do get a warm reseption about a F2P like Tribes did, you need to pay special attention to what the community is saying when you introduce your payment models. Everyone was clearly saying that their pay/unlock model was terrible, but it took a mass exodus of the player base to make them renege on it. Reddit said it best that "Hi-Rez makes great games, and terrible business decisions".

All that being said, Tribes was a very solid game when I was playing it a lot about a year ago.

Alas tis is true, HiRez is HORRIBLE with the FtP model but their games are good.

That said now that everything is half off the game basically got completely re balanced. You dont have to spend 20 hrs grinding to the 88k xp items. I dont think the game will be changing so much more unfortunately on the gear side as much because they think its "balanced" but thanks to their business decisions not really.

That said having a FPS game based around CTF vs just killing (CoD/Halo) or around objectives(Battlefield) is amazingly creative and its the only reason I keep playing
