What's up wankers?

I'm a complete and utter noob to DOTA2. I played a few rounds of LoL previously, none of DOTA 1 or HoN. Been enjoying (addicted to) this game since I randomly was selected to be part of the Beta. Its been endlessly frustrating and infuriating, but those are the kind of games I'm attracted to. I started with RTS with Warcraft 2, Age of Empires, C&C 1, Red Alert, and Total Annihilation. More recently I got into Supreme Commander, but not on a level where I could play against people online without getting absolutely stomped. I'm a pretty terrible DOTA 2 player overall, but I have some strong(er) heroes where I'm good enough that I don't embarrass myself.

I recently tried Chen after a surge of confidence and got absolutely shut down by Riki. Not going there again until I get micromanagement down.

Games I can actually hold my own with are FPSes, mainly TF2.

I'm 26 with a double major in Chemistry and Visual Art, if that interests anyone.

The initial idea I put forward was just an idea to get the ball rolling. It sort of works in ideal situations, but in reality its not too useful. The ladder system will be the most accurate way to rank people, but the downside is that it will take some time for the ladder equilibrate.

This current hate towards Russia is completely illogical and sort of embarrassing for the /r/dota2 community, in my opinion. American players, and I'm sure European players are no better in terms of play-style than anyone else. I selected American servers due to concerns about ping, and I've met some terrible players there.

Anyways, that's my rant. I'm sure everyone else in this forum will agree with me that there will be no anti-Russian or any other form of racial stereotyping here, as all are welcome and encouraged to play.

Hopefully I'll see you in game.

I just moved out of the Capital District last year. Was there for about 6 years for school and work, but now I'm back in MA. How is pro CS? I stopped playing somewhere around mid-high school as I realized that I'm just not patient enough for the game.

Awesome work getting things started, but I don't think I'll be able to make it as I have plans for Sunday.

As I mentioned in previous posts, the new replay system allows you to download your own private matches and view them. This will be VERY useful, if it works, for officiating the tournament games. These files are located in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota\replays
The location, of course, depends on your own computer's settings, but once you find your steam folder you should be able to find your replay folder by following the structure.

So, if you would please follow this link and download one of my recent private game replays: http://www.mediafire.com/?kij0ddjyfbpudgb

EDIT: I had up different instructions before, so here are new ones that I have had work with one other person so far:
Download the file and put it into the correct folder mentioned above.

In steam's games library and right click on DOTA 2. Select properties and then "Set Launch Options." Type in "-console" and then close out. Then open up DOTA 2.

The console should open up automatically. If it doesn't hit the "~" key to get it to pop up.

In the console type: "playdemo replays\5655079"

Hopefully the game opens.

Let me know if it works. Thanks in advance!

This kind of thing happens in all games where countries are mixed in the in game world. In FFXI there was a whole Japan vs. everyone else thing going around, and I think still happens. There are a lot of Japanese players that specifically don't want to play with American. The reason for this is likely because of communication issues in parties, but the problem is exacerbation on both sides. There is one sort of interesting cultural difference in the game, though. From what I know I think it is very rude in Japanese culture to stare at someone directly, and since the game is an MMO and people have various pieces of equipment players are able to examine other players armor selection. When this occurs the recipient of the examination receives a message. In English the message is innocuous saying something like, "Cloud has checked you" or something to that effect, but in Japanese apparently it says something like, "Cloud stares at you intently" or something that comes off more creepy. What you can do in the game to stop people from looking at your armor is once you receive that message you can change your armor and it will drop the other player from your equipment screen, which is what some people would do. This created a sort of bad blood between players. Sorry if this hijacks the thread, but I think its interesting how cultural differences can play out in video game worlds where everyone is essentially the same.

It looks like the new replay system allows for private matches to be transferred, so we can probably get rid of the screenshot thing.

The system doesn't seem to be much different to me, although I haven't played with it much. Seems like the most useful addition to the system is the ability to select points along the timeline rather than just using fast forward and rewind.

I don't think we need to have someone watching each match with this feature. I think uploading the demo and having the staff review the match will be enough. Unless there is a problem all we will need to confirm is the final outcome.

Having the demos available online would be great, I think, so long as we have bandwidth. Replays are 20-40MB each.

As I said though, I have some plans for tomorrow so I won't be able to help, but I'll be available after those plans are finished to help score the games if needed.
