So, fellow word-nerds (if there are any here). What words bother you the most, and why?

Slacks - They're pants. This word doesn't need to be said, ever. Its useless and it both sounds and feels terrible to say.

Irregardless - Its just "regardless".

Moist - Apparently everyone hates this word

Remarkable - The word is meaningless, if you think about it. Anything that you describe as remarkable is remarkable because you just described it as remarkable.

Moist - I need to disagree with you there, moist is just one of those words that forever will be in my list of amazing ways to break really awkward silences.

as to what bothers me: people flipping their shit when someone uses "literally" when they should have used figuratively. at this point in time it has become a common understanding that "literally" can now be used as a term of exaggeration.

to flip the idea here for a moment, my favorite word is schadenfreude. just a beautiful word to describe a factor of human nature that exists in everyone.

hella - This word is horrible and should never be said unless referring to one the few things actually named "Hella" (such as municipalities in Iceland or something).

I realize this is a common gripe but: I can't stand the texting and internet abbreviations. "can u play dota2 2nite?" Eww.

OBJECTION! Moist is a great word. You just don't know how to use it correctly.

Words that irritate me: when people say something among the lines "essentially, ultimately, basically" before a sentence when the word doesn't warrant subject in the sentence. It's basically a a smarter sounding way to replace "ummm or uhhh".

Ironically the use of "basically" in your last sentence isn't entirely necessary. "It's a smarter sounding way to replace 'umm or uhhh'" works.

I think you are correct in this, I say this partly becuase I agree, and partly becuase Cartman used this word and it is therefore hella annoying.

I am in full agreement here. It's an almost forgivable offense if you are a 14 year old girl. However, I still hear this word come out the mouths of people from my generation far more than is comfortable to me.

Sometimes speaking with my younger sister (4 years younger) is painful. When she's with a group of her friends, my ears tend to bleed quite profusely. The hellas, likes, omg and other IM speak that for some reason they use in proper conversation is astounding. When any of my friends say lol or omg out loud, I lose it.

You know what drives me crazy?

u instead of "you". ur instead of you're or your.

Hell.... you don't even need to know the difference between Your and You're (but I will give free instruction on demand).... just please, for the love of god, don't be so lazy that two extra letters are so much work.

I see this a fair amount at work from intelligent, educated, professionals writing this in e-mails.
