You have all the experience you need, yes, you! Even though you don't think you know enough, you do. Say it with me, YES I CAN CAPTAIN!

In order to form a more perfect union of dota people, I propose we encourage more people to try captaining in our inhouse games. While obviously some (and by some, I mean one) of the usual captains are awesome human beings with good hair, it would, perhpas, be good with a bit variety, so all of us can learn more. I would especially like to see some crazy, but effective strat or compositions that people can come up with.

What do you think?

I like captaining a lot, though people complaining about picks for literally the whole game today was starting to really piss me off, to be frank. :\ There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with picks and saying so, but complaining about it all game put a bad taste in my mouth and felt really disrespectful. I have disagreed w/ captain's picks before and brought it up, but I would never complain about it all game, even if I thought the "mis-pick" was game-changing. (Which happened recently w/ a Sand King pick when I thought Earthshaker was significantly better vs. the enemy lineup.)

I think it's a lot easier for people to be respectful when people like Gambit and Shane are captains - even when Shane is doing fun, but ridiculous stuff like banning all evil looking heroes (hehe) - than it is to respect some of us Nooblier of Doobs when we're captaining, but is something everyone needs to work on if you two want more people captaining.

For my part, I have pretty thick skin and am happy to try my hand at captaining whenever I'm not feeling too sick, but that tells me if it's something that is putting me off, I would expect it would put others off who may not be willing to speak up.

(Hope this post doesn't offend anyone. I know I'm newer here so I don't have too much ground to stand on, but I fucking love playing with you guys: It's made the game 200% more fun - real maths hehe - and I wanted to give some honest input.)

This is great input! I like captaining as well, I think it really helps get a better grasp on why heroes work together, who counters who (theoretically), etc. I've experienced the all game complaining and I'm sure that I've done it to someone. I think we all have relatively thick skin (we're playing dota after all ). If someone is genuinely annoying me, I say something. Suicide was pissing me off to no end the past few days, and I pretty much just went, dude, stfu you're actually pissing me off, and he was pretty cool about it and laid off a bit.

I think we're all pretty friendly and think if something like this happens, just say something like lay off and stop being an asshole would suffice. Personally this wouldn't offend me and would let me know that I was being an asshole (something I strive not to be ). That being said, sometimes I'm in a bad mood, get annoyed for no reason, etc and just need someone to tell me to stop (Uno is the man at this).

Thread hijack! I know exactly what you are talking about and have been mulling this for a few weeks now. This is from our "about us" page:

DotaNoobs.com strives to be a place where new or lower-skill players can come together to enjoy this amazing game and play with a friendly and understanding community.

To my knowledge the "striving" has been on an individual level, where players buy into this idea and act accordingly. When there is conflict over these ideas, for example a lot of negativity, someone simply had to step up and tell that person off. I've been around for this and done it myself and the effects were mixed and fairly short-term. I think that the community has to decide how seriously we want to encourage and/or enforce these ideals. There has been some talk about having more organization, particularly for Sunday IHs, where certain members are labeled as moderators or whatever. I don't know how binaryatrocity and Alverez feel about short-term Mumble bans in extreme cases, and maybe official warnings would suffice at keeping the community true to its ideals.

For my part, I have pretty thick skin and am happy to try my hand at captaining whenever I'm not feeling too sick, but that tells me if it's something that is putting me off, I would expect it would put others off who may not be willing to speak up.

I completely understand, playing with Doobs is fantastic and I think we need to fight to keep it that way. Cheers!

I agree whole-heartedly. There is a need for some kind of mechanism for encouraging/discouraging certain types of behavior. It's not so much about one-time stuff, as it is about consistent behavior. Everyone can have a bad day afterall.

As far as inhouses go, I would like everyone (myself included) to try to trust their captain more. If the captain has a weird picks or strategy you should try to trust that the captain's vision, instead of giving up or arguing that x pick would have been better. I've been in many games where my team pulled out a win despite people considering the picks terrible. This goes for captains as well, if you don't believe in your team, then you will most likely lose at the first sign of trouble, since you half given up already.

By the way, I've seen you captaining, Kree, and I thought you did a great job, so keep at it.

Aww, I thought we could make a Doobs Frown Police team.

Doobs Police Force: Frown Division

A small group of Doobs members whose sole purpose is to make sure that fun is had, raging is stopped, and ridiculousness is spread.

The groups consists of:
Shane- Captain. Irish. Key Phrase: "Save meh!" Qualifications- Shane wrote his doctoral thesis in turning a frown upside down. Whether a quip or jape, Shane will make sure no frowns are had.

UnoPolak aKa Deputy Smiles- Deputy. American. Possibly of Polish ancestry. Key Phrase: "Come on guys!" Qualifications- It is believed that Uno doesn't know how to rage, but the true story is that his ability to rage was removed a long time ago. When Uno was younger, he was an uncontrollable ball of rage. Through experimental surgery, his rage glands were removed.

Known- Sergeant. Irish. Key Phrase...Anything said with his "hollywood" irish accent. Qualifications- A relative newcomer to the force, Known instantly made his name...known...with his fantastic "hollywood" irish accent. No matter the situation, Known uses his irish charms to calm everyone down.

FallenElf- Lieutenant. American. Reformed Rager. Key Phrase "FUCK! Sorry, I didn't mean that, but FUCK." Qualifications- A hot head who has trouble keeping his temper under control. FallenElf works to both suppress his own rage while trying to diffuse some delicate situations around him. Coupled with his counselor, UnoPolak, Fallen is mostly successful in holding back the beast within.

There's an open position on the Doobs Police Force: Frown Division. Please submit resumes below.

Realistically, this Team Frown Police is an absolutely fantabulous idea. In reality, your just DotaNoobs staff! And I think it should be made loud and clear that absolutely ANYONE can report bad mannered behavior to one of our staff, and that vote against said person will be recorded in a staff-only area where we can tally up and decide if/when someone has to be spoken to or flat out banhammered.

As much as it sucks to lose a member who comes to play with us, I think UnoPolak has been on money and we need to remember what DotaNoobs is supposed to be about, and that means the new players always come first and getting rid of things that spoil that carefree environment should be a priority.

I also think on Sundays when we arrange the first games, we should let newcomers and new players fill slots in the first games, make sure we get anyone who is just coming to visit us or lower skilled into a game and start playing, instead of watching/spectating. We usually fill up 2-3 games so no need to worry about not having a slot, I just think those of us that have been around for a while can wait for teh second game to organize and make sure young blood gets first dibs.
