I have had access to Dota 2 for a couple weeks, but for some reason didn't want to play it.
Might have felt that as soon as I joined a game people would shout noob every 5 seconds. :L I am not that great with the MOBA genre.. recently been playing League of Legends, but got used to locked camera.. and that is apparently a death sentence.. ._. but with Dota 2, I find using unlocked camera really easy compared to LoL. :L Wierd, yeah. ._. Not into voice chat or anything. Sticking to bots until I can find a character I like. Open to character recommendations considering I am new to Dota 2. Ones easier to play perhaps. some of the selections are darkened out for me, so try recommending ones that starter/new people get. On League of Legends I play champs like Shyvana and Akali, so if there are anyone similar on Dota 2, that would be nice. oh! and where is the damn secret shop?! :L i havent explored the map much cause buying items alone is still confusing. ._. played 2 games total so far. ._. |

Welcome! I never played LoL, but after a quick look at Shyvana and Akali it looks like you are interested in a carry (deals a lot of damage late in the game, typically weaker in the beginning). Take a look at either Bounty Hunter or Riki if you like stealth mechanics, or maybe Luna if you like a carry that also does a lot of nuking. You actually have access to all of the heroes immediately, you just need to switch from the "recommended heroes" to "all heroes" in the picking window. I personally would suggest picking up something like Skeleton King since he only has one active skill and can let you focus on learning other aspects of the game initially.
There should be a ping on the mini-map if you try to buy (right-click) an item that is only available there. The secret shops are forest off of the top lane on the Radiant side just below the river, or on the bottom lane on the Dire side just above the river. You can also find select "secret shop" items in the side shops of both the side lanes, for example the Ring of Health and Energy Booster. This community is fairly big on using voice chat, and most of the parties form up on the Mumble server. There was one hero I played with and like, Viper.
He is a carry and his poison is awesome, his ult literally melts opponents. Liking him so far, and I have played skeleton previously, only thing with him is he is melee. And as I have found in Dota 2 so far, melee are gonna have a hard time. The ranged carries seem pretty OP, Sniper and that electric ring person to name a few. |

Welcome to the community! Like everyone else said you should really get in Mumble and play a few games with us
 No need to wait, I find being with a friendly group a much better learning experience than delving into the violent pit that is solo-queue.

Skeleton King is easy to play and kind of a carry. I personally think Lich is one of the better teachers though. Ranged with very simple abilities in the support role. Teaches you when you should go in ... and punishes you for being out of place (cause Lich doesn't have that much HP and is pretty easily destroyed).
His ult is pretty fun too. Its like Brand's except, imo, more powerful and more noticeable. |

Melee heroes definitely take a bit more to get used to, figuring out when to go in for a last hit and not take harass, etc, but are also insanely fun to play. Sniper is also really fun to play (if you have good support!!!) and Razor (electric ring guy) is also super fun. As many have mentioned, just hop on the mumble server and join in on a few games. I played a few bot games when I started, but ended up just jumping in and haven't looked back since! Welcome! |
