But I've yet to get steamrolled in a game where there winning side were bad mannered about it or trolling.

Unfortunately I have. I expect that crap out of a 4chan league, not a reddit league.

Just outta curiosity did you build that rig? What made you go with a Intel chip and a AMD GPU?

Yeah, I built it about a month ago. I went with the intel CPU because it had the best benchmarks in my price range and ran cooler than the AMD CPUs. Went with the Radeon GPU because it slightly outperformed the similar NVIDIA card. Also, both of those choices were just slightly cheaper than their competitors.

Name's JBrown! in dota, but I just prefer people call me Jeff. Alverez got me into DOTA a couple weeks ago after playing some LoL games with him. Having fun meeting everyone so far, generally people have been great to play with. I'll be in the mumble and IRC on and off, so say hi if you see me.

I'm ok with just about any night of the week, but Sunday night worked really well for me. I enjoyed the hell out of those games (except when we lost, of course). Just throw an announcement up on the boards or the subreddit and I'll be there. If you need my help with any organizational stuff, let me know. I'll pitch in where I'm needed.

I don't know if it's really possible to make a hard and fast statistic that determines whether you are a noob or not. I think it really has to be run on the honor system, and if you find yourself dominating in every game you play, you should probably bow out of the league and start teaching/casting/spectating. So far I think everyone has been very honest, although I've definitely played a couple people that are way higher on the learning curve than me.

* Coming from a LOL background - it's overwhelming how much hard CC there is in Dota2. That said - there is also a very noticable lack of gap closers and easy escapes. This makes pure melee heroes as vulnerable as they can be deadly. It's also probably the reason why this is my worst kind of hero to play.

I could not agree more on this point. It's so frustrating to try and run from a gank in this game. Seems almost impossible in most cases.

I have a couple hundred games in LoL. In general I find LoL to be a more balanced game, but definitely significantly easier. In Dota, if a hard carry gets a few levels up on the other team, the game is over, while in LoL there's always a chance to come back and win.

I can't believe how much more CC Dota has than LoL. It makes a blink dagger a necessity on many heroes, which I dislike immensely. In the course of a normal game you make around 10-12k or so in my experience. That means you're spending close to 20% of your total income on an item with no stats purely because of how hard it is to run away. I like LoL's system of giving you that ability in your summoner spells.

That said, Dota definitely has a much steeper learning curve and more room for you to improve. I can see just about all of us being infinitely better players in a year. In LoL, really the only way to be a better player once you master the basics is to find a good team to play with and learn how to counterpick.

I think Dota is going to really blow up as a competitive game. It's the first game ever with a great system already in place for broadcasting, spectating, demoing, and commentating at release. If it's free to play like most people expect, I think surpassing LoL's 32 million players will be quite easy.

I've played maybe 15 dota games at this point, and I can already tell that I'll end up liking it more than LoL, but it will also take a much larger time investment to really learn the game and its intricacies.

Outside of MOBAs I generally stick to RPGs and FPS. Favorite games of all time are Fallout 1/2, Half Life 1/2, Dragon Age 1, Day of Defeat, and all the old adventure games like the Kings Quest series and Full Throttle.

That's the thing, just because someone is better or worse then you or even our average Doobs player doesn't mean they aren't "noob". You can play a game steady for a year and still consider yourself a scrub compared to professional players. The main thing is to try and keep our in-house games somewhat balanced, and try and find a place for everyone who wants to participate.

Well, you can be a scrub compared to professional players and still not belong in a noob league. I played Day of Defeat for 10 years or so, won a little bit of money playing it, and probably was in the top 100 players in the world at a couple points, but there were still people leaps and bounds better than me. Even though I was a scrub compared to the true professional DoD players, I had no place playing in a league like IGL, where I was regularly accused of cheating. I understand the fun of stomping on some scrubs, but I don't really think this league is the place for it.

You're actually looking forward to Global Offensive? Last I heard, pretty much every pro CS player hated it. What do you like/dislike about it?

I like it. On first inspection I would just add a couple things. On the basic side, an explanation of stats and what they do for each type of hero. For more advanced players we could talk about managing creep waves, pulling, and stacking although that could fall under lane control which you already have on there. Picks and counterpicks for each hero. Team composition and how to build a team for a certain strategy. Smoke ganking. Counter warding.
