I look at a lot of online guides and also watch videos with Alan, Dotacinema and Purge and all offer different choices and have different justifications for them. I know it's a little bit dependent on how you play the character, but what do you reckon works best for him? Power Treads, Arcane Boots or Phase Boots?

Oh man, Gambit is going to have fun with this.
Personally, I think that Tranquil Boots are the way to go. Why do I think this? Well, Arcanes are nice if you're going to spam your dot, which works on squishy supports whose carries won't let them get a last hit to dispel it (where's essem when you need him?) but usually you won't get them early enough for them to be worth it. Treads, are an ok choice I guess. They give you mana/health/attack speed but in general aren't that great. Phase give you the +24 damage and the chase, but to me, axe isn't really about his right click damage. He's the only pure tank in Dota2. Tranquil Boots give you increased movement speed and the ability to heal at almost any time. A standard Axe build covers most of the things that the other boots you mention do. Usually I rush Tranquils and then a quick Vanguard. You can farm one up quickly while jungling or in lane. After that it's blink dagger time. Once you blink in and make everything attack you, you'll be counter-helixing like a boss. Then run away from the fight and pop your tranquils. Then get ready to blink back in ![]() Just my two cents. Edit: Gambit, how'd I do? |

Don't the Tranquil Boots break upon 3 instances of damage though?

Not permanently. They break after 3 instances of 20+ right click damage I believe, and then can heal you again as long as you don't take 3 instances within 10 seconds. So to me, they're really useful in the early game. It basically means Axe almost never needs to leave his lane or jungle and can farm up that quick Vanguard. They can be disassembled later to build Vlads or Hood. I think hood is a pretty good item on Axe for the magic resistance.

I almost always see Axe players going with Tranquil boots. They make it so he can really stay in lane/jungle and get levels quickly. I think having someone else on the team get arcanes and feed Axe mana while he uses tranquil is probably the best answer here.

When I was playing him, I'd use those till mid game and then disassemble/switch to either phase or treads. |

What's funny is after I wrote that reply I went on Dota 2 wiki and read the item description carefully saying 'breaks for 10 seconds' and was like (face palm). I tried those boots out in a prac game and yes, I was able to stay out jungling longer, gain levels faster (as well as gold) and then jump into lanes with Culling Blade on fleeing enemies. YOU GET NOTHING! GOOD DAY, SIR!
But mana is an issue, what jbrown says is a good idea but that kind of cooperation with pubs is rare. Especially when you can't communicate to them. |

Remember, you don't have to keep the same boots forever! Tranquils definitely make the jungling faster and can help you get those core items faster, and after that you can switch to arcane's to give you (and your team) a little more utility.

YOU GET NOTHING! GOOD DAY, SIR! But mana is an issue, what jbrown says is a good idea but that kind of cooperation with pubs is rare. Especially when you can't communicate to them. I've tried out the various boots, and I almost always prefer tranquil. In the early game, tranquil boots are the cheapest, and you need your Vanguard/Hood/Dagger as soon as possible. In addition, having extra regen is awesome for jungling and tanking creep waves, and allows you to be more get more farm. If you need mana, I usually go Soul Ring, which alleviates most mana issues. If you are laning, and you already have a RoH, and a lane partner/team mates that need mana, Arcane Boots can be a good alternative, but will delay survivability items. Treads give extra survivability, but Hood/Vanguard/Dagger is much better early game. Late game, if you have an AC or another DPS item, Treads are a decent choice to deal more damage. Phase is often my choice after I've disassembled my tranquil boots as it gives lots of mobility, however, keep in mind, that you could save that 1K gold, and get your dagger that much sooner. |

Tranquil <3 makes your early game jungling so much easier, you can take stacks way earlier

It depends entirely on your game situation. If your sidelane is fine and you plan to do some sustained jungling I would suggest getting some tranquils for the regen. On the other hand, if your sidelane has a hard carry that is being harassed I would suggest rocking some arcane boots to spam battle hunger and try to chase the enemy out of the lane. If you want to roll with the old school build of maxing call second and leaving battle hunger until later, then phase boots could be considered an option for the speed burst that assures you don't whiff your call.

I normally go tranquil but tried mana yesterday and found it was handy to have the extra mana. I going to rush shivas a bit quicker in future because with blink dagger axes mana pool really shoots down quickly!
tranquil boots and soul ring ftw i reckon. The extra speed from tranquil is pretty immense. |

Tranquil with a soul ring. The soul ring provides the mana you need and tranquil heals it back. Its alot more cost efficient and gives the nice armor hp regen and mana with added AS.

Personally, if I can't get a KotL when I play PL, that's what I go for. |
