Hey, Canadian guy here who just got into DotA2 about a month ago. I found this community on reddit and wanted to check it out. I played a bit of SCII when it was first released but overall I'm really new to the RTS and ARTS genres. I don't really play that often due to my limited free time, but when I do, I usually solo queue. Which sucks. Anyway, I've logged in about 46W - 42L so I'd say I'm still very new. I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys are all about and I hope I get a chance to play with some of you!

Regards,

Migglypuff

I like this idea and I'd participate if time permits. I've always wanted feedback on what the eff I am doing.

I'd like to join in on this parade if time permits as well. I usually play with a handful of friends, but I guess their days in LoL turned them into flamers. Which I'm not completely down with.

I had something to say, but I forgot.

I hope you remember what it is. I'm all curious now.

Saturday works for me fine. Still gotta figure out TS3. If we could swing it a little earlier that'd be nice. I'm usually not available Saturday evenings.

Hey Kildry, I played a bot match with you last night. Glad you made your way to the forum! Us new guys need to stick together...or something like that.

Ok, so that was interesting. A recap for those not involved:

We got stomped twice. We may have (probably) played against teams way out of our skill range. Not much was learned as we were probably too busy getting our faces melted.

So here's what I think we can improve:

Form a team of only new players (sorry lemon. We do really appreciate you subbing in though, and you did give us helpful advice).
Communication; despite us being on ts3, we didn't really talk much.
Determine roles before we start; as new players, we feel comfortable as supports. But not all of us can be supports.
Play against bots. Yeah.

Also the teams weren't stacked with more experienced players I checked both games and if I recall correctly I was the only player above 100 wins except for maybe Sauce in our second game

Well now I feel just worse.

Other than playing pubs/bots, I think some of us would really benefit from watching some videos online/reading some guides. I'm not sure how its like for the rest, but personally, I've done that and am aware of some of these basics and try my best to put it in practice. But typically end up forgetting about them when in-game/under higher stress situations. So I'm not sure what its like for the rest of us - either they are not aware of the basics or are like me, forgetting them due to stress.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Its sorta like exams, I tend to just panic and forget things in the thick of it.

I also forgot to thank Skyop. Thanks! Regardless I still had fun.

I think having a newer guy Captain is a better idea. A more experienced player, be it myself, lemon, or Uno, can give advice, but figuring out why certain heroes work together on your own will benefit more in the long run. I think a rotation of roles is also the best way to go about things. Mainly, rotating through positions 1-5 that way everyone works on a different role on a weekly/bi-weekly basis, seeing why certain heroes work with certain builds, etc.

I don't mind this idea. It sorta forces us to think a bit more critically. Generally when I play bot games, I'm concentrating more on how to play the specific hero effectively, not so much teamwork. That's where I need to improve a whole lot. That and the 1 & 2 roles. However, it would be nice to have a captain who knows when to do things. I probably have the most games under my belt as the new group goes, but I still have no idea when to gank, gather for teamfights or any of that timing stuff.

Good game tonight Miggly. Do you think it's more beneficial to play games like that? The only problem is, 90% of the time, you'll be pulled into a higher matchmaking bracket.

It was definitely a fun and interesting game. I did learn alot, especially how pub games evolve in the higher brackets. Like I said after the game, that was far and away more different than my normal pub games. Fallen, it really helped when you gave me advice on where I should be positioned in certain situations (FAR away from the PL and Kotl lane; back of a teamfight as Lion/support). It was also EXTREMELY helpful to hear you guys talking. To hear who you guys were initiating on and who you were ganking was completely new to me. I never hear it in pub matches.

Although, like koppen said
But doing 5-stack from these are very dangerous, cos the weaker ones might just end up feeding all the way as they've singled you out as the weaker one.
I felt a little anxious because I really didn't want to drag the team down. It was especially bad when PL and KotL were just destroying me in lane.

To be completely honest, I don't know if it's the best way to learn for the really new guys. No offense of course, but I feel like Skyop and 00steve would probably have a much more difficult time than I did with that game in the same situations. However, I do think it would be in their benefit to play with some higher bracket players to coach them like you did, and just to experience it. Basically, I think us new guys should experience games like that one, but not rely on that as the primary learning method.

Anyway, thanks for the game fallen, it was heaps of fun.

Wow you guys DO post a lot.

And getting back to the topic of this hijacked post. Are sign-ups still available for the mentoring? As you can well see I am interested (a little to much to be honest).

This sort of evolved didn't it? Initially I figured it was just a group of new players who would play a match together and get feedback on what we were really struggling with.

@TechSupprt; there's a lot of good 'new player' learning material on the /r/dota2 subreddit on reddit (which is where I learned of this place). I would highly recommend combing through it. It's a lot of info to take in but it's all very good. http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/wiki/faq#wiki_what_are_some_basic_tips_when_starting_to_play

Honestly, I'm finding the best way to learn what you need to know is a combination of both research and practice (just like all things). The biggest issue is finding an environment to do that practice. I can read up all I want on timing ganks, but I avoid trying it in a pub match because I don't want to screw up the team. Bots are a little tough because you can't really communicate with them. So I just suggest we all just keep playing together and give each other room to push our comfort zones (someone practicing a hard carry role for example) and learn.

Welcome! I'm glad you made your way here. Make your way over to ts3 sometime and play a game with someone. If you manage to find one of the higher level guys, I'm sure they'll just spew knowledge all over you. Like a slime. But good.

Sorry guys, I've been awol from the forums for a while (I forgot they were back up). The Q&A to inhouse game sounds like a great idea, I definitely have some (probably dumb) questions to ask. You can count me in for sunday. Although, I'm not sure I still fall into the new player catagory, I would still like to participate.

Under 150 wins, still new. Under 250, still noob. Over these numbers, we'll talk . jk

Fantastic. I'm going to milk my noob status for all its worth, prepare for questions! It's such an odd concept to me that DotA is a game where 400+ hours played can still mean you're new. Not that I'm complaining and I'm still laughably bad at SC2 despite how much I used to play that.

Welcome! There's lots of opportunities to group with like minded, equivalent skilled players here so be sure to jump in when you like. As ATLAS just mentioned, hop on teamspeak or even the Dota Noobs channel in-game to find a group.

Thanks again for the Q&A Fallen,Lemon, and Snuffles. Very useful to practice what we learned, though I still have a long way to go. I hope some more people can jump in on the next one.

What are we thinking should be the next topic/focus? I, for one, would like to improve on mid or solo laning (rune control, ganking, aggression, etc.). Sometimes I'll end up in mid based on my hero (I like to queue SD or AR), and I'm generally weak at it.
