I am relatively new to the game and I have been playing a lot of Templar Assassin but I feel that I can do better as a different character. Can anyone help me look for a new hero or role to look into. I am pretty much into anything but I got kinda addicted to Lanaya's refraction. Any help is awesome and I would love to fill any spots in teams or parties to learn. Thanks in advance.

The best thing to start with is usually the support heroes, but im all for people learning a hero other than lich lion or lina.

heres some things you can ask yourself:

Do i want to tank up alot of damage?
Do i want to dish out the damage?
Do i want to be getting kills or being involved in getting kills often?
Do i like helping the team haha

these are the kinds of thigns you can start with when trying to figure out who to play.

I remember when i started playing years ago i picked Lina Inverse only because i loved the idea of doing 1200 damage with the push of a button. But like these days i either love sitting back and farming or i love playing the hyper agressive mid role because i love dishing out the damage and i love being in those pressure situations because i love performing "in the clutch"

another good tactic is to look at all the heroes and say okay this guy sounds cool and then try him for some bot games, if you cans see yourself playing him for a few dozen games then go learn him! youll learn all the heroes eventually it all comes down to who and where you want to start with. Dont let other people dictate who you should go learn. its just a game haha play who you want to play to make it fun for you!

Sounds like awesome advice. In other games I see myself as a support guy but in dota I feel a lot more like really crushing and surprising the hell out of people. That is part of the reason I liked Templar Assassin so much because I could go meld refraction them chase them down for the kill. I don't think I have enough skill for a carry though.

A few heroes who are great for newer players are heroes such as: Tidehunter, Lion, Lich, Drow Ranger (But she is really the epitome of pub trash). There are really lots of heroes which don't require a large amount of skill or practice, its just knowing how to use the heroes skills and what items to get in the particular match.

If anything would be easier to tell you which heroes to avoid. These would be heroes which require micro or skill shots or are just very hard carrys. Such heroes are; Meepo, Enchantress, Chen, Invoker, Pudge, Spectre, Faceless Void, Phantom Lancer, Medusa, Broodmother and Visage.

Some other heroes might be a little tricky, but the only way to learn is by practising with them

Hmm, a lot of people are going to give you a lot of different advice. Personally, when I first started I played a support a lot. Supports are generally pretty squishy and don't get a lot of farm, forcing them to rely on positioning and mana control in order to be used to their full effectiveness. Starting off on heroes that can tank damage easily can lead to you relying on that tankability too much. I'd start off playing heroes like:

Venomancer- Great slow, decent damage early game, strong ultimate
Lich- Lich is a fantastic baby-sitter
Lion- Targetable stun, hex, and his ulti is a giant nuke (that shouldn't be used to kill steal, but rather help burst someone down.)
Vengeful Spirit- Great stun, Wave is minus armor and good passive. Swap, again, helps you learn positioning.
KotL- Always useful, huge nuke, and Chakra Magic.
Shadow Shaman- Great pusher, nuker and disabler.

What should you be focusing on when you pick these heroes? Work on stacking and pulling for your carry (stack/pull times, when a pull is necessary), harassing your opponents in lane without over extending yourself, when to be aggressive, protecting your carry from ganks, and last hitting. I mention last hitting, because as a support you need to be pretty damn good at last hitting since you won't get a ton of opportunity to do so in the early-mid game. Every time you're given the opportunity you can't waste it.

Also, as support, keep in mind that you need to be wards constantly (if you're in low level pubs, you could even try de-warding, it's hilarious. I was playing with a bunch of newer people and when I de-warded I got called a cheater since wards are invisible). Also, you're item choices are generally more team focused, rather then focusing on making your self strong. A Venomancer with Arcance Boots and a Mek is more useful than a Venomancer who stole farm from their own carry and ended up buying a Manta.

I'm not saying you shouldn't play other heroes, but the heroes above will help you learn some basic fundamentals that you won't see too often in low level pubs.
