Hello folks. The Ouya console has started shipping to Dev's and kickstarter's that back the device a couple of months back. Anyone in here have any interest in the Ouya? Received a couple of reviews on one of my news feeds and for the initial units floating out (which most maybe Dev units) the reviews are not very promising to say the least. Granted that the device is still not out to the general public, but I was really confused as to whom the target audience for this device was/is? Is it for mobile gaming folks? Are they making to satisfied the gaming on the go folks who want to play their angry birds on the 48" hdtv they have? Translation of touch controls to an actual controller is detrimental to some of these IOS/android games?
Here is one of the reviews out from the Verge if your interested to see what they had to say. http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/4/4180242/ouya-review http://youtu.be/46xR70X21YY I understand the "growing" influence android/OS games are having in the industry so far ( and the oppurtunities that come from a hackable console), but i think the company took more than it could chew on this foray. Hopefully they are able to overcome these first few miss-steps and become a good, well rounded gaming platform. Edit: Added link to youtube video of Totalbiscuit's info program where he brings up very good points for anyone who may be interested in the Ouya. |

I think the Ouya is pretty interesting, if nothing else it's a pretty decent music/video streamer that should support nearly everything if one has the patience to tinker a bit.
I think it's going to a pretty good casual console, but nothing like Xbox 360 or the PS3. Something like Xbox Live Arcade in a $100 box, which to me, sounds pretty cool. My only real complaint is that it is based on the Tegra 3 CPU/GPU, which isn't very powerful compared to even phones like the Galaxy S 4 or the Nexus 4. |

I thought they said it wasn't even good at that in the review.

Up scaling to any kind of HD is my first concern. Again I don't have one to play around with and yes the potential is there for this device to be something great. Exactly what, that remains to be seen.

It's a console playing on the strength of a free market and low costs. I'm noe going to buy one, but I can see why people would want to.

Posted by Alverez I thought they said it wasn't even good at that in the review. I felt that the Verge review was extremely unfair since they are were reviewing pre-release software. No one except the Kickstarter backers (who have already bought it) are going to see that software as it is now, because they are currently still improving it. It's like reviewing a beta of game, and complaining about it not being very polished. I just think it's too early to say anything about the software or the games. When this launches in a couple of months, then you can tell how the experience is. |

It's definitely a sweet little box and I can see it being great for anyone who doesn't want to invest in a console/steambox/HTPC but wants a bit of similar functionality. For example a few of my aunts would love this thing for the living room and their eight-year-old's wouldn't know the difference between Angry Birds and a PS4.
With the linux-based SteamBox (hopefully) right around the corner, this just isn't something I'd want to invest in, especially with the HD up-scaling issues that similar Android-based set-top boxes have. You'd be much better off with a really cheap AMD APU with XBMC and Steam Big Picture. |
