I picked this up on a whim when I bought the StarForge Alpha from the Steam Early Access Sale and I've been in love with it since, so I thought I'd share it with you all as it's not very well known.

http://gnomoria.com/

From their website:
Gnomoria is a sandbox village management game where you help lead a small group of gnomes, who have set out on their own, to thrive into a bustling kingdom! Anything you see can be broken down and rebuilt elsewhere. Craft items, build structures, set traps and dig deep underground in search of precious resources to help your gnomes survive the harsh lands. Build your kingdom and stockpile wealth to attract wandering gnomads to your cause, but be wary of also attracting enemies!

If you've ever played the epic Dwarf Fortress you'll feel right at home as this game is literally a clone. It is nowhere near as complex as DF (understandably) and as it's still in Beta I imagine many new features are incoming. The graphics are adorable and perfectly suited for the genre, and the background music is way too catchy (you can switch between 8-bit and Orchestral at whim).

I'm at work now but I'll post up some pictures of my current villages when I get home (I'm running one on Normal and another on Peaceful so I can get a feel for the progression).

It's not multi-player so it's nothing we can play together but I am really enjoying playing an hour of this before bed each night, really winds down from the DotA.

I go this game a few days ago. Thanks for the post. Its pretty awesome. I am horrible at it though. I consistently get slaughtered by badgers and now my wood cutter is running around the main hall when there is wood to be cut. Its a truly confusing game but everyday, a little more makes sense.

My advice is to start a "peaceful" world where you don't have to deal with enemies, but still work on getting a your first military squad together and training/equiped/ready to slaughter.

I've been putting a training ground at the entrance to my outside farms and at the entrance to my cavern, thus allowing the Squad to train until an enemy tries to get in, at which point they're already in place!
